Happy Advent everyone! Advent is a wonderful time of waiting and wonder. We reflect on the past waiting of our ancient ancestors who waited for Jesus. Now we all wait for the return of Jesus; advent is a time to reflect on that waiting. This can be difficult for some of us, as waiting is not always our strongest suit. A good example being that 4 people on my street had their Christmas lights up before Thanksgiving! Of course, Christmas music is on the radio already and many stores have had Christmas decorations displays. My guess, in a few years we will start Christmas planning in July.
I understand the fervor for what we have made Christmas. The beautiful lights, the great food, and lots of presents. We love it so much we can’t wait for it, and try to start it sooner all the time. What we are missing in our lives is the beauty of waiting. The anticipation and build-up of something that we have been waiting for a long time. Something more than lights and presents. It is the return of Jesus, our future hope.
God has ordained this season for the church. A time to wait and reflect on the birth of Jesus, and the future time when Jesus comes again. I hope for us, this advent season we can all wait together. That we can worship together in this time of waiting. That we can pray for each other in this time of waiting. I hope that we can simply wait, thinking of the birth of our savior, and what that means for us. Last year we had to do the waiting alone. I hope that this year we gather together during advent. Worshipping and waiting as we think about the birth of Jesus!
Peace in Christ,
